Dr. Richard T. Hughes: Christian America?  - Nov 17
Perhaps the subtitle of the last chapter of his book says it all: "From the Scopes Trial to George W. Bush."

If so many Americans claim that America is a Christian country, then what do they think Christianity is really about? Are "rugged individualism," military might and the Almighty Dollar core Christian values? This is the sort of question Dr. Richard Hughes raises in his recently published book, "Christian America and the Kingdom of God."  In his book, Dr. Hughes argues that the claim that America is a Christian country is a powerful myth that distorts the meaning of Christianity.

On Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009 Dr. Richard Hughes, Distinguished Professor and Sr. Boyer Fellow of Messiah College in Grantham PA, will address this theme before an audience of the Interfaith Alliance of PA.   The meeting will be held at 7 pm at the Jewish Community Center at 3301 North Front Street, Harrisburg.

TIA: Amazing Faiths Dinner Dialogue
Thursday November 12, 2009
St. Stephens Episcopal Cathedral
221 N. Front St., Harrisburg
6:00 p.m.

The Amazing Faiths Project, developed by the Interfaith Ministries of Greater Houston, is a nationwide effort to get people of all faith perspectives talking to each other in meaningful ways. The centerpiece of The Amazing Faiths Project is a set of Dinner-Dialogues, held annually in cities around the United States and other countries.  To learn more, see www.amazingfaithsproject.org

The dinners sponsored by The Interfaith Alliance of PA will be held on Thursday, November 12th at 6:00 p.m. at  St. Stephens Episcopal Cathedral, 221 North Front Street, Harrisburg.  TIA_PA would like everyone to participate.  Let us know you are participating by contactnig us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

The dialogues provide an opportunity for people to meet people of other faith traditions, to share their experiences and listen to the sharing of others, and to converse about matters of faith and spirituality.  The evening will be managed by moderators who facilitate the conversation in a structured way that creates a safe space for all to share and listen.  Guests share a meal together and dialogue together with the use of dialogue cards created exclusively for the Amazing Faiths Project, which contain thought provoking questions about the broad themes present in nearly all faith traditions and worldviews.

Discrimination is still legal... Is that still acceptable?
Do you know that anyone in Pennsylvania can legally be denied or fired from a job, or denied housing accommodation, on the grounds that someone else does not like your sexual orientation? Discrimination is legal.  A bill before the Pennsylvania House of Representatives would change that.  Of course, the loudest part of the religious community does not want such discrimination to be outlawed.   It is because of religion that this discrimination still is legal.  If you don't think that should be the case, click here to learn more:
http://tia-pa.org/news/91-hb-300-fact-sheet-pas-non-discrimination-bill

Let your voice be heard.  Tell your state representative that you don't think religion should be used to justify discrimination.
