Martin Luther King Day of Service

Last Monday MLK day of Service had a very successful launch to kick-off the 2012 Day of Service.   While we are pushing hard to get projects registered on the site-there are only a handful there---and we really need you to register your project today!    It will take 5-10 minutes, but it is extremely important that we have projects on the site when we begin the outreach for volunteers.

Also, we need help promoting the MLK Day of Service in the Harrisburg Holiday Parade.  Please contact Tanya ((860) 833-7423) if you are willing to help on parade day!

Finally-we need your help getting more community organizations, non-profits, and religious organizations involved.  By growing our network, we will increase the number of projects-and have more volunteers for those projects.  Please make calls and send emails to those in your network-and ask them to become a Community Partner (we will put their name on the website).  With your help, we will increase the number of projects on King Day, and also increase the number of volunteers that will help with these efforts.

Thank you for your service!

Religious Pluralism and Tolerance
November 17, Harrisburg; 7 - 9 pm
Camp Curtin Memorial Mitchell United Methodist Church
2221 N. 6th Street
Harrisburg, PA

Penn's Colony was open to a great variety of religious groups. Friends, Mennonites, Moravians, Presbyterians, Lutherans, Anglicans, Catholics, Methodists, Jews, Muslims and more could all be found in pre-Revolutionary Pennsylvania. Later waves of immigration added-and continue to add-even greater variety. While, according to modern standards, the extent of toleration was limited at first and the ideals of toleration were not always honored, the hope and expectation of mutual respect among religious groups remains Penn's legacy. The speakers will discuss religious pluralism and tolerance and their limits in Pennsylvania's history and will explore such issues in view of the more recent growth of Asian and Middle Eastern religious communities in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.

The presentations will be followed by Q&A and discussion, and a reception will provide additional time for discussion.

While this program is free and open to the public, you should confirm your attendance by telephoning PHMC's Bureau for Historic Preservation at (717) 783-9933 or by e-mailing This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

TIA-PA Goal/Mission Statement:

To create an interfaith movement in Pennsylvania where citizens committed to the American values of justice, equality and compassion are encouraged to speak out in support of issues and policies which promote that vision.

To create politically resonant religious language derived from that progressive social vision, and engage our community by restoring that language into the larger society.
