SEPTEMBER 11th TENTH ANNIVERSARY

INTERFAITH REMEMBRANCE TO BE HELD IN HARRISBURG

The community is invited to an Interfaith Remembrance of September 11, 2001which will be held on Sunday, September 11, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Stephen's Episcopal Cathedral, 221 North Front Street, Harrisburg.  The program is presented by the Interfaith Alliance of Pennsylvania and St. Stephen's Episcopal Cathedral.

The Interfaith Alliance of Pennsylvania is a multi-faith organization whose members work together to build a strong, vibrant, peaceful and prosperous multi-faith society.

The theme of the program at 2:00 p.m. on September 11th is "People of Faith Building Our Future Together." The keynote speaker will be Imam Yahya Hendi, Chaplain and Professor at Georgetown University. Imam Hendi is the Islamic Chaplain at Georgetown University, a Jesuit institution in Washington DC, and founder of Clergy Beyond Borders.  He has been outspoken in America and in the Arab world about the need to confront extremists within their own traditions.

A panel discussion at 3:00 p.m. following the ceremony will focus on confronting extremists within your OWN faith tradition. Much is said regarding the need to deal with extremists in other people's faith traditions. It is much harder to stand up to extremists in your own community, but much more necessary.

Panelists will include Imam Yahya Hendi, Rabbi Carl Choper, Sensei Anthony Stultz of the Blue Mountain Lotus Society, and John Peterson, past Dean of St. George's Anglican Cathedral in Jerusalem.

Conversation initiated in the panel discussion will continue at at dinner-dialogue held at St. Stephen's Episcopal Cathedral, beginning at 6 p.m. on Thursday September 22.

Two other efforts are being launched in conjunction with these commemorations:

-      Clergy Beyond Borders is launching its American Reconciliation

Caravan Tour, beginning in Harrisburg;

-      The Religion and Society Center plans to create a sustained multi-faith dialogue program in Central Pennsylvania, moving forward from September 11, through September 22 and beyond.

LGBT Interfaith Coalition
~~~~~~~
TIA-PA has been sponsoring a monthly meeting of concerned religious leaders - both clergy and lay to openly discuss the challenges the faith community faces regarding the legal and legalized oppression of Lesbian, Gay, Transgendered and Bisexual poeple in our society.  Most of this oppression, is a direct result of faith communities.
In Pennsylvania, not only is marriage denied, but housing and employment discrimination is legal - and it is not even considered a hate-crime if people are assaulted because of their sexual orientation. Culturally, most people today recognize the human dignity and inherent worth of people regardless of their sexual orientation. (Ironically, this seems to be more true outside than inside the faith community.) This newly-acquired recognition of basic human worth is not reflected in Pennsylvania's legal system however. How can we, as religious leaders, help carry this recognition forward?
FROM the NATIONAL OFFICE of THE INTERFAITH ALLIANCE:
"Since 1996, the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) has prevented same-gender marriages from being recognized as legal on a federal level. The Respect for Marriage Act (H.R. 1116/S. 598), currently in Congress, would right this national wrong by repealing DOMA."
TIA-PA Goal/Mission Statement:
To create an interfaith movement in Pennsylvania where citizens committed to the American values of justice, equality and compassion are encouraged to speak out in support of issues and policies which promote that vision.
To create politically resonant religious language derived from that progressive social vision, and engage our community by restoring that language into the larger society.
