| The Power of Forgiveness - Jan. 19th
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At the January meeting of the Interfaith Alliance, we will view segments of award-winning Martin Doblmeier's video, entitled The Power of Forgiveness. The video has vignettes of forgiveness in Northern Ireland, Ground Zero, the Nickel Mines Amish tragedy, Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel on the Holocaust, Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh, and others, in addition to interviews with clinical experts who discuss the damage to health which can occur when one cannot let go of hate. We will watch approximately 45-50 minutes of discussion with those impacted in the various vignettes, saving the clinicians' interesting discussions for another time. After watching the video, Mike Sand will lead us in a discussion of what we have seen and its relevance to the various situations of conflict of concern to all of us. The meeting will begin at 7 pm on Tuesday, January 19th at the Jewish Community Center at 3300 North Front Street in Harrisburg. Please plan to join us for this unforgettable video and perhaps as much as a half hour of discussion, afterwards.
January Sunday Forum Series at St. Stephens Episcopal Church: Atheism
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
January Sunday Forum Series at St. Stephen's Episcopal Cathedral at 221 N. Front St. in Harrisburg.
For the first three Sundays in January, the topic of discussion for Sunday Forum at St. Stephen's Episcopal Cathedral will be atheism. Sunday Forums meet from 9:00 -10:00, and are held on the third floor of St. Stephen's Episcopal School in a room known as the "Uppercroft." It is accessible from a door on Cranberry Alley between Front St. and River St., immediately across from the parking lot for the Dauphin County Bar Association. An elevator is located inside to the right.
On Sunday, January 3rd, David Messner will discuss the views of the genial and brilliant 18th century English philosopher, David Hume, concerning the existence of God. Hume is often considered an atheistic philosopher.
On Sunday, January 10th, several members from Pennsylvania Non-Believers will join the Sunday Forum at St. Stephen's to share their accounts of what atheism means to them, and their life stories of their journeys to atheism.
On Sunday, January 17th, David Messner will discuss the views of more recent philosophers concerning the status of knowledge claims about the existence of God in regard to atheism, agnosticism, and religious belief.
All are welcome to attend. Those preferring not to attend the following 10:15 Service at St. Stephen's are welcome to leave the Uppercroft via Cranberry Alley without entering the Cathedral.
For additional information, call or e-mail David Messner at 717-770-0462, or

TIA-PA is joining efforts with other organizations to support a screening of "Out in the Silence" in Lancaster on Jan 17th. | Pennsylvania: Are These Your Values?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
U.S. Representative for Pennsylvania, Joe Pitts of District 16, including Lancaster County, is being asked a lot of questions regarding his role within the affairs of the East African country Uganda, specifically, the Ugandan bill to place their homosexual citizens in jail for life, and in many cases sentence them to death by hanging. Congressman Pitts is chairman of the House Values Action Team (VAT), a legislative caucus group in the House of Representatives. Reports from VAT can be found on the internet:
http://johnshadegg.house.gov/RSC/vat.htm
According to the book "The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power", by Jeff Sharlet, VAT grew out of prayer meetings conducted by a secretive Fundamentalist Christian Fellowship in Washington DC, named The Family. Since the book, and the introduction of the Ugandan bill, The Family has identified itself, and confirms its Christian value influence in Ugandan politics.
http://wthrockmorton.com/2009/12/16/the-fellowship-aka-the-family-opposes-uganda%e2%80%99s-anti-homosexuality-bill-guest-post-by-jeff-sharlet/
You'll find the name of Congressman Pitts in this article with implications as a member of the Family.
Congressman Pitts uses his position on the VAT to insert into U.S. Legislation the requirement that for Uganda to receive U.S. aid for HIV/AIDS prevention, they must teach abstinence-only sex-education. Details can be found in Jeff Shalet's book p.328, and in the congressman's own words:
http://www.house.gov/apps/list/speech/pa16_pitts/PEPFAR.shtml
For an alternate view of the effectives of absence-education, see an article from Human Rights Watch:
http://www.hrw.org/en/reports/2005/03/29/less-they-know-better
http://www.avert.org.uk/aids-uganda.htm
Since learning the extent to which the Uganda Parliament has taken the advice of American Evangelists and Congressmen, several Congressmen, including Rep. Pitts sent a letter to the Uganda President asking that he not include the death or life sentence penalty for homosexuality. However, the letter continues to call for oppression of gays, and does not suggest decriminalizing homosexuality.
TIA-PA urges Pennsylvania citizens to ask Congressman Joe Pits:
- Who is on the House Values Action Team, and who do they represent?
- What is the agenda of the House Values Action Team, and who sets it?
- What is the relationship of the House Values Action Team to "The Family" (also called "The Fellowship"), and what is the influence of that secretive fundamentalist fellowship on the Congress through the Values Action Team?
- How much of the agenda of the Values Action Team in both the House and the Senate is developed in prayer meetings?
| What's in a Holiday Season, Anyway?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
PA Non-Believers (PAN) made a request to erect a sign celebrating the winter solstice alongside a pre-existing nativity scene at the Memorial Fountain in Chambersburg. The Borough Council, rather than deciding to allow the alternative sign, chose to disallow all displays. According to Carl Silverman, PAN Capital Area director, "We didn't want to take Jesus out of the public square. We want to put atheism in the public square." The Harrisburg Patriot-News reported that the Chambersburg council made this decision so as not to allow other groups that they considered to be much more "odious" to also display signs or messages. Members of the Chambersburg community responded defensively, holding a demonstration at the Memorial Fountain, and affirming their belief that only Christian messages should be displayed during the winter holidays.
Perhaps a better solution would have been for Chambersburg to practice inclusion, and allow all forms of holiday well wishes.

TIA-PA Goal/Mission Statement:
To create an interfaith movement in Pennsylvania where citizens committed to the American values of justice, equality and compassion are encouraged to speak out in support of issues and policies which promote that vision. To create politically resonant religious language derived from that progressive social vision, and engage our community by restoring that language into the larger society. Are there issues and events happening in your area? Tell us about them so we can share with others. Have ideas on programs and events you'd like to see? Share your thoughts so we can collaborate.
